"Volunteering was always on my to do list and I was glad I had the chance to explore and travel... in this way. Thanks to a staff and other volunteers for making this such a GREAT experience." Hugh from Australia

Volunteer Abroad Program Overview — Guatemala

When you join one of our community service projects you are giving yourself the opportunity to make a difference by:

Voluntary service

After Spanish lessons, you will join your host project to begin your volunteer service in different parts of the country according to your assignment. Your voluntter service can last 2 weeks to 10 months (or more) depending on your selection and type of project.

Requirements

Arrival

Upon arrival of your flight in Guatemala City, you will be met and welcomed at the airport by an INLEX staff member.

Where you'll be staying

INLEX has arranged for you to live with a Guatemalan family throughout your language training and your service and are eager to help you integrate into their culture.

Why do we place you in a host family?

1) to help your understanding of the culture of Guatemala 2) to strengthen your Spanish language skills.

Family Coordinators have been assigned to assist with home stays, assist with recruiting families, serve as counselors and troubleshoot any issues that may arise.

Your home stay family has been given an orientation to learn about the program in detail; the roles and responsibilities of the family, the volunteer and INLEX, cultural differences between other countries and Guatemala, health, safety and other important aspects of your stay.

Your host family will be an important part of your volunteer experience. Periodically, a staff member will visit you and your family to see that everything is running smoothly.

Orientation

You will receive an orientation before starting your service which will cover:

You will also receive an orientation packet covering the points discussed and other useful information. If you are taking Spanish classes, your classes will begin the day after orientation.
